Coupang Eats Delivery Partner in Korea

Korea has a very well-developed delivery system.
Until a few years ago, there was a separate profession for delivery, but nowadays, with the development of platforms and apps, even ordinary people can easily deliver and collect fees with a simple registration process.

I used to always order delivery, but I got curious about how the system works, so I decided to give it a try!

Considerations Before Getting Started

1. Delivery Method

For me, the first consideration was how I would make deliveries.
I initially wanted to try delivering on foot while getting some exercise, but in the end, I had to use my car because I didn’t get any delivery requests on foot for 30 minutes. :(

2. Conversations with Strangers?

LOL I was concerned about having to interact with customers every time I made a delivery.
However, more than 90% of the requests were for contactless delivery at the doorstep, so it turned out to be more comfortable than I thought.

3. Are You Navigation-Challenged?

If you lack confidence in finding your way or consider yourself navigation-challenged, you should think twice!

Deliveries sometimes take you out of your neighborhood, and you end up going to all sorts of places, so it can get confusing. If you’re good with navigation, you’ll be fine!

KakaoNavi and T Map work well and are integrated.

4. Ready to Deliver? Here’s a Pro Tip!

If you’re determined to start delivering, I’ll give you some great tips for beginners.

(1) Referral

When you sign up using a referral, you can get a 10,000 won bonus if you make your first delivery within 7 days! Both the referrer and the new user receive 10,000 won each!
Unfortunately, I didn’t do this at the beginning and missed out on the bonus. :(

(2) Completing Safety Training

Complete Safety Training <— Click on the link to go to the Coupang Safety and Health Education page!
Here, after signing up and taking the course, and passing a simple quiz, you can receive a 20,000 won bonus for your first delivery within 7 days of joining!
The course takes about 2 hours, covering topics like traffic safety rules and other common but easily overlooked safety information.

By completing both (1) and (2) like this, even if you make just one delivery, you can earn a bonus of 30,000 won, including the delivery fee! Please note that you must complete this within 7 days of signing up!

Start Delivery!

I couldn’t capture the Coupang delivery partner app, so I had to take photos with another phone. :(

When you activate the button in the upper right corner, you’ll start receiving delivery requests!
It takes about 15 seconds to accept a call after it comes in.
During this time, you can check the route and delivery fee and decide whether to accept or decline.
After a certain amount of time, the request will automatically be declined.

The number in the center at the top shows how much income you’ve earned today as a delivery fee.
The fork and knife symbols on the map roughly indicate the locations of the restaurants calling for deliveries.
Below the ‘기흥구4’ is information about the current range of delivery fee prices in that area, and below that, it shows the delivery frequency.

At the bottom, there’s something called ‘오늘의 미션’ or ‘Today’s Mission.’
There are monthly missions, and sometimes they notify you through push notifications.
Today, several missions came up suddenly due to heavy rain, and that’s why I decided to do deliveries today!
To start, go to the restaurant where the call has come in, press the ‘매장 도착’ (Arrived at the store) button.
Then, check if the serial number assigned to you matches the number on the receipt of the restaurant’s food.
Once they match, you can pick up the order!

It’s not very difficult, but when I first started, I had a bit of trouble finding where the serial number was located.

After pressing the ‘픽업 완료’ (Pickup Complete) button, the delivery address will be displayed on the app.
Keep in mind that the address is not listed on the receipt!

After making the delivery, you must take a photo.
If it’s a face-to-face delivery, take a photo in advance and deliver it to the customer.

Acceptance Rate, Delivery Completion Rate

September was the month I started delivering for the first time.
I made 19 deliveries over two days, and I earned approximately 100,000 won, I think.

For the period from 10/1 to 10/7, it includes today’s deliveries! I did a total of 8 deliveries.
The ‘수락률’ (Acceptance Rate) indicates the ratio of accepted to rejected delivery requests when a call comes in.
If you reject deliveries due to reasons like it being too far, wanting a break, and so on, your acceptance rate will decrease.
I’ve heard there are disadvantages to having a low acceptance rate, but I didn’t really feel it, so I just went ahead with the deliveries.
However, that doesn’t mean I accepted only what I liked; I accepted most of them.

As for the ‘배달 완료율’ (Delivery Completion Rate), it comes into play when you’ve accepted a delivery but need to cancel it due to a mistake or other circumstances.
This can impact your completion rate.

Multi-Delivery

Multi-delivery, commonly known as ‘알뜰배달’ in Coupang Eats, is a system where deliveries are bundled together with others to save on delivery fees instead of offering discounts on the delivery fee.
Although it may take a bit longer, it has the advantage of saving on delivery tips.

In the case of multi-delivery, you generally receive higher delivery tips
(it varies each time, but it’s approximately 1.5 times or more)

You don’t need to memorize the order; just accept the deliveries, and then follow the order shown step by step.
No need to worry; it’s surprisingly user-friendly! 😊

Today’s Earnings, Missions

Today, I actually had no plans to make any deliveries, but suddenly, with heavy rain, I received a bunch of push notifications!
So, I checked, and although the time frames were different, three missions were overlapping.

(1) 6:52 PM to 7:52 PM, complete 3 deliveries for 7,500 won
(2) 7 PM to 9 PM, complete 6 deliveries for 6,000 won
(3) 6:21 PM to 8:21 PM, complete 5 deliveries for 10,000 won

Like this, there were three overlapping missions, so I waited until 7 PM and immediately accepted a call to start making deliveries!
Mission times are calculated based on the time you accept the restaurant call, and they count it once the delivery is completed.

For example, with (1) mission, if you complete three deliveries during the given time frames like 6:52 PM to 7:20 PM for one delivery, 7:20 PM to 7:50 PM for another, and 7:50 PM to 8:20 PM for the third, all three are considered as a successful mission!

I almost failed one of the missions, but I managed to get the calls just in time and successfully completed all three missions, earning a 23,500 won bonus!
Combined with the delivery tips, it’s about 84,120 won, and later on, they deduct taxes or insurance, etc. So, it’ll be roughly around 80,000 won!

I started delivering at 7 PM and finished my last delivery at 9:40 PM, so it took approximately 2.5 to 3 hours.
Considering only the earnings I received, it seems like an hourly wage of about 30,000 won!

However, you need to take into account personal expenses like gas and vehicle maintenance.

Review

Here are some brief observations I made during my three days of delivery:

(1) It’s surprisingly fun!

I tried missions for the first time today, and even before that, there was a strange sense of satisfaction with each delivery I made, along with the fun of accumulating delivery tips.
Today, doing missions added even more enjoyment.

(2) You cover a wide area.

I initially started with the intention of delivering on foot, but before I knew it, I found myself crisscrossing between Suwon and Yongin.
I ended up going quite far, connecting nearby restaurants, and it was fun to see how far I could go.
However, I liked using the destination function to prioritize deliveries near my home.

(3) You’ll develop a fondness for villa/apartment buildings

This is entirely my personal feeling, but… To enter an apartment, you have to call the security office to access the underground parking lot, call at the entrance to open the front door, ride the elevator to go up the high floors, and then take pictures at the front door.
It can be quite overwhelming. So, I started to prefer villa or officetel areas…
Also, those who provide the front door PIN in the delivery instructions are amazing! 😭

(4) Concern for small business owners

I’ve heard that delivery tips are expensive, but while doing deliveries myself, I wondered if there would be anything left when doing it this way.
Especially today, with heavy rain and a significant surcharge on the delivery fee, I had received about 9,000 won in delivery tips for delivering food that costs around 20,000 won.
I don’t know much about it, but Coupang will take a commission, and after card fees, taxes, and other deductions, I wondered how much would be left… Just some food for thought.

Here are some records from today’s deliveries, and you can see the promotions and surcharge amounts attached.

(5) It can get a bit hectic

When you’re carrying food, you can’t help but feel a bit rushed, even without realizing it, especially when doing multi-deliveries.
Sometimes, one restaurant may have less prepared food, and you end up waiting for a longer time.
In such cases, you’re waiting with one order ready while the other is still being prepared.
Even though it’s not something I’m going to eat, it can make you feel a bit anxious.

(6) It’s like a source of energy

After completing deliveries, there’s a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction.
It feels like you’ve achieved something, and it can be quite fulfilling.
It also feels like a proactive action that leads to personal growth.
When I come home from work and rest, I usually just want to lie down, but after going out and working, I feel a sense of accomplishment and a desire to find other things to do.
I think this summarizes everything for now.
Since I have a job, I might not be able to do deliveries very often, but I’ll definitely do it occasionally.

Especially on rainy days, I’ll be sure to do it because they usually offer good delivery tips!
If I discover new things while doing deliveries in the future, I’ll make another post about it. (Stay tuned for the sequel – Part 2)

Wishing everyone a wonderful day!
